sunnbrella is the project of London-based musician and producer David Zbirka.
The project began as a lo-fi bedroom pop affair, initially garnering attention after releasing the single ‘Feelin’ Invisible’ – produced together with Eyedress. However David soon steered his artistic vision in a more sonically ambitious direction, effortlessly intertwining his love of ethereal shoegaze and dream pop with rhythmic, vintage-but-modern dance-music-inspired sounds, all underlined by a strong pop sensibility.
sunnbrella's debut album 'Heartworn' - which was co-produced by Patrick James Fitzroy (PVA, Sorry) - was released on the 24th of February 2023 to critical acclaim, with album release shows at Rough Trade East and Rough Trade Bristol as well as special solo showcases in New York and Montreal. The band supported a number of artists off the back of the album release including No Rome (Dirty Hit), Night Tapes and Tim Kinsella (of Cap'n Jazz/Joan of Arc) & Jenny Pulse (Kill Rock Stars). The album was listed as one of the best albums of 2023 by the Toronto Star and received coverage from the likes of Line of Best Fit, Earmilk and Full Moon Magazine. The initial vinyl run of the album has fully sold-out.
Recently sunnbrella has completed successful UK and EU tours which included an evening slot at Pop Messe festival in Brno (CZ) - where the band shared the stage with the likes of Spiritualized, Mareaux or Tommy Cash - a sold-out headline show at London's Shacklewell Arms as well as their first shows in Paris, Berlin, Rotterdam and more.
sunnbrella kicked off 2024 as support on Beach Fossils' UK tour and released new single ‘have your say’ on the 14th of February, with The Line of Best Fit calling it “a glitching kaleidoscopic ode to loneliness”. They are set to perform at Pohoda Festival in Slovakia, joining the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Jockstrap, James Blake, Yaeji, Arlo Parks and many others on the line-up with more live dates to be announced soon.
Beyond sunnbrella, David has traveled extensively as a drummer, performing in the UK, US, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notable collaborations include touring with Golf Alpha Bravo, the solo project of Gabriel Winterfield from Jagwar Ma (supporting Angus Stone's project Dope Lemon) as well as Max Bloom (Yuck) and more recently London's dream-pop ensemble Drug Store Romeos on their UK tour in support of Belle & Sebastian.
sunnbrella creates: sun-bleached shoegaze | beat-driven melancholy | chronically online pop-gaze
